The most meaningful night in sports now offers a lesson for the classroom! The Musial Awards recognizes and celebrates stories of extraordinary sportsmanship from around the country. Many of the award-winning stories have involved young people who possess maturity and selflessness beyond their years.
We realize it’s not possible for every student to see the young role models honored at the Musial Awards in-person. However, it is possible for every student to see the honoree stories and learn the lessons embodied by the event’s namesake – Stan “The Man” Musial. Schools can now order the Musial Awards DVD and Educator Resource Guide from the Sports Foundation free of charge.

Mo’ne Davis
Standout Pitcher, Women’s Sports Advocate
Mo’ne Davis was the 18th girl overall to play in the Little League World Series, the sixth to get a hit, and the first African-American girl to play. She was also the first Little League baseball player to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated as a Little League player. Her dominant performance on the field, as well as her determination and actions off the field made her the perfect recipient of the Musial Award for Extraordinary Character.
Josh Zuchowski
An outstanding swimmer, an even better friend
Josh Zuchowski and Reese Branzell are two of the best young swimmers in Florida. They routinely swap first and second place finishes. The two boys are rivals and good friends. However, their friendly rivalry would be placed on hold as nine-year-old Josh learned that Reese had been hospitalized from a bacterial infection in his hip. Upon hearing the news, Josh’s focus shifted. Instead of competing for himself, he decided to compete for Reese.
Olivet Michigan Youth Football Team
Extraordinary teammates
The kids of the Olivet 8th grade youth football team in Michigan provided an amazing model of sportsmanship that truly came from the heart. Their parents and coaches didn’t have to come up with a plan for them. These kids call their own plays – particularly when it comes to teammate Keith Orr.
Keith is a member of the Olivet team. Keith is also learning disabled. His teammates hatched a plan to get him in the end zone to score a touchdown during a game last fall. The boys kept the idea to themselves, though. No coaches or parents were involved. They didn’t notify the other team either.
