ST. LOUIS – March 24, 2016 – The St. Louis Sports Commission is accepting nominations for its annual Carl Fricks Sportsmanship Scholarship through Monday, April 4. The scholarship is awarded to graduating high school seniors from the St. Louis metro area who exemplify outstanding sportsmanship. This year, the organization will award $15,000 in scholarship funds with the top award winner receiving $10,000 to apply to higher education expenses. Administered by the Sports Commission Associates – the Sports Commission’s young professionals group – the scholarship program is part of the organization’s efforts to promote sportsmanship in the community.

Nominations must be received by April 4. The recipient will be selected by April 30.

ST. LOUIS – March 15, 2016 – Beginning tomorrow (Wednesday) at 9 a.m. Central, fans can order tickets for next year’s NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in St. Louis. Tickets can be purchased online at ncaa.com/tickets or by phone at 800-745-3000. The 87th NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships take place at Scottrade Center on March 16-18, 2017.
The University of Missouri and the St. Louis Sports Commission serve as hosts for the event, which returns to St. Louis for the eighth time since 2000. The 2015 Championships in St. Louis set the event’s all-time total attendance record of 113,013.
More than 19,000 out-of-town fans, student-athletes, coaches, media and officials visited St. Louis for the 2015 Championships.
The NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships have had six consecutive sellouts: 2010 in Omaha, 2011 in Philadelphia, 2012 in St. Louis, 2013 in Des Moines, 2014 in Oklahoma City and 2015 in St. Louis. The 2016 NCAA Wrestling Championships take place this week at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Scholarship candidates should be nominated for embodying the ideals and values of sportsmanship – honesty, integrity, civility, selflessness, kindness, compassion and class – on the playing field. Athletic performance (wins and other statistics) does not factor in the selection. Those connected to athletic teams, such as student managers and cheerleaders, also are eligible for the scholarship should their leadership and behavior represent an extraordinary standard and model for all in sports to follow. Greatest consideration will be given to nominees who demonstrate a track record of sportsmanship and respect directed at opponents, officials and the spirit of the game.
The Sports Commission Associates created the Sportsmanship Scholarship in 2009 to recognize and reward local high school seniors for their character in competition. The group raises funds for the program and selects its recipients. In seven years, the Associates have awarded $45,000 to 20 college-bound area students. Their bios can be viewed by clicking here. GOLF EVENT OFFERS CHANCE TO MEET GREATS OF THE GAME AT OLD WARSON COUNTRY CLUB IN SEPTEMBER
ST. LOUIS – Aug. 10, 2015 – The Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Salute to Greatness golf tournament is coming to St. Louis this September. The two-day toast to the greats of the game provides a chance to rub elbows and play golf alongside Pro Football Hall of Famers like Eric Dickerson, Jackie Slater, Kellen Winslow and Jack Youngblood. LOUIS – June 25, 2015 – On Saturday, July 4, St. Louisans and visitors from across the United States will run through Forest Park during the fourth annual Freedom 4 Miler and Family Fun Run presented by Schnucks. A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit the USO of Missouri, a private non-profit organization, whose mission is to support the troops by providing morale, welfare, and recreation-type services to military personnel and their families.
