MUSIAL AWARDS TO AIR SATURDAY NATIONALLY ON CBS

ST. LOUIS – Dec. 18, 2019 – St. Louis’ home-grown Musial Awards take the national stage this weekend. The show will air throughout the country on CBS on Saturday (Dec. 21) at 1 p.m. CST. Viewers will get to see the top moments and inspiring stories celebrated at the 2019 Musial Awards, which took place last month at Stifel Theatre in St. Louis. The show has been packaged into a one-hour special for CBS. It will precede the CBS Sports Classic college basketball doubleheader from Las Vegas featuring North Carolina vs. UCLA and Kentucky vs. Ohio State.

The Musial Awards – presented by Maryville University – honor the year’s greatest moments of sportsmanship and those in sports who embody class and character. The event and its awards are named for Baseball Hall of Famer and St. Louis Cardinals legend Stan Musial, a beloved superstar and civic icon who personified sportsmanship. Shining a spotlight on kindness, selflessness, integrity and civility, the Musial Awards aim to inspire people across the nation to be good sports.

In addition to Saturday’s telecast on the CBS broadcast network, encore presentations of the Musial Awards will air on cable’s CBS Sports Network on Monday, Dec. 23 at 6 p.m. CST and on Tuesday, Dec. 24 at 10 a.m. CST. The Musial Awards broadcast is being produced by Al Roker Entertainment, the production arm of 13-time Emmy Award-winning TV personality Al Roker.

“We are thrilled that the entire country has a chance to see what we call the most important awards in sports,” said Frank Viverito, president of the St. Louis Sports Commission, which, along with its affiliated National Sportsmanship Foundation, produces the Musial Awards. “The CBS platform provides us a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and elevate sportsmanship in America while showcasing St. Louis to the nation as a community of ‘good sports.’”

The broadcast will feature Olympic Gymnastics legends Bart Conner and Nadia Comaneci, who received the Musial Lifetime Achievement Award, the highest award for sportsmanship. Also appearing in the telecast are Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis, three-time Olympic gold medalist Jackie Joyner-Kersee, and individuals from throughout the country recognized for their extraordinary sportsmanship.

Even with the national focus, St. Louis will be well-represented in the broadcast as this year’s Musial Awards celebrated the class and character of Blues superfan Laila Anderson and radio broadcaster Chris Kerber. Several local landmarks also make cameos to provide additional St. Louis flavor. The show is hosted by veteran St. Louis TV news and sports anchor Mike Bush, who has served as master of ceremonies for the Musial Awards since its launch in 2005.

2019 marked the 14th year the Musial Awards has taken place in St. Louis. Over time, the event has honored the most remarkable acts of sportsmanship and some of the most respected people in sports. Since 2011, Maryville University has served as the event’s presenting sponsor. The school’s involvement, leadership and generosity have helped make the show one of the great nights in sports. In addition to Maryville, sponsors of the Musial Awards broadcast on CBS include Edward Jones, Enterprise, World Wide Technology and Centene.
